NACSW’s April 25th Audio Conference on Spiritual Development

NACSW is delighted to announce that it will offering an audio conference workshop on Monday, April 25, 2005 entitled “Spiritual Development as a Component of Social Work Practice: Approaches, Our Own Development, and Utilizing Spiritual Assessment Tools” from 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm Eastern Standard Time.

This audio conference, presented by Hope Straughan, Ph. D., will first present a bio-psycho-social-spiritual approach to social work practice. Various ways of thinking about development theories in general & spiritual development in specific will be reviewed, including a segment in which participants will consider their own spiritual journeys, development, and identities. Finally, spiritual assessment tools will be presented and discussed in order to further one possible application of inclusion of spirituality within social work practice. Overall, the focus will be on the integration of openness to acknowledging the possible strengths, concerns, and impacts of persons’ spirituality within the helping relationship.

Hope Straughan is assistant professor of social work at Wheelock College in Boston, MA. She is also an associate editor of Social Work and Christianity, and guest editor of an upcoming issue of Social Work and Christianity focusing on volunteerism. Dr. Straughan was a board member of NACSW from 2002 – 2004, and is currently a Board member of the Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups (2004-2007).
