How to Support Someone Who Is Grieving: The Role of Christian Faith and Spirituality in the Grieving Process

Abstract: Even as professionals, those of us who are supporting a grieving person can find it hard to know what to do or say to show the person you care.  It can be easy to feel like you might say the wrong thing at the wrong time that does not provide comfort.  We invite you to join us for a presentation and discussion of how to help others who are grieving the loss of a loved one. Sam Dexter, MDiv, MSW, BCCC will share information about the grieving process, what to say (and not to say) to someone who is grieving, and share ideas for supporting the grieving person, with an emphasis on the role of Christian faith and spirituality in the grieving process.

Grappling with Faith: Teaching with Decision Cases

Abstract: This workshop will introduce the case method of teaching using didactic and experiential methods.  Essentially, the case method involves in-depth class discussions of open-ended accounts of actual practice situations that are themselves ambiguous and complex. These accounts require participants to first formulate the problem and then decide on a course of action. The case discussions help participants to acquire and refine important critical thinking and decision-making skills. The workshop will provide a rationale and guidance for using case method in Christian higher education, in part through a live case discussion and debriefing. It will also provide tips for using cases from NACSW¹s Grappling with Faith, additional resources for learning to use the case method, and suggestions for evaluating student learning outcomes.

AFTERNOON Option #3: Half-day Preconvention Institute

Drinking from the Well: Addressing Substance Use Disorders with an Empowerment Framework

Abstract: Substance use disorders (SUD) represents clinically significant impairment caused by the recurrent use of alcohol or illicit drugs (or both), including health problems, disability, and failure to meet major responsibilities at work, school, or home. Misuse of prescription psychotherapeutic drugs is second only to marijuana as the nation’s most prevalent illicit drug use issue. Use of prescription psychotherapeutic drugs in the past year was fairly common in the United States. In 2015, an estimated 119.0 million Americans aged 12 or older were past year users of prescription psychotherapeutic drugs, representing 44.5 percent of the population.

This workshop will address the multifaceted and complex issues of prevention and treatment of pregnant and parenting women with opioid misuse. Special focus will be on stigma reduction strategies, policy practice implementation that is trauma-informed and gender specific treatment utilizing theoretical frameworks to support families impacted by substance use.
