NACSW Convention 2017: Frequently Asked Questions

What? NACSW’s 3-plus day convention with 120+ workshops & posters and opportunities to earn continuing education hours and network. The convention theme is “Advocating for Peace, Justice & Reconciliation in Communities,” with a special track on Empowering Communities.

When? November 2-5, 2017

Where? Charlotte, NC at the Crowne Plaza Charlotte Executive Park, located at 5700 West Park Drive.


Who can attend NACSW Convention 2017?
The NACSW Convention is a good fit for social work practitioners, social work educators, social work students, human services workers, church ministry staff, and anyone interested in social services and social change.
What does my registration fee include?
The full convention registration includes attendance at all plenary sessions, coffee breaks, workshops, the opening reception on Thursday evening, and the Saturday evening banquet. One day registrations for Friday or Saturday include all plenary sessions, coffee breaks, and workshops for the day you’ve registered (but does not include the Saturday evening banquet).
How do I register for the event?
You can register online or by downloading the registration form and mailing it in with your payment.
What are the registration rates?
The Convention 2017 early-bird registration rates are listed below. After October 13, 2017, rates go up by $25.

Full Registration Rates (Does not include Preconvention Training Institutes)

  • NACSW Member: $245
  • Non-Member: $325 (Non-member rate includes 1/2 year NACSW membership)

One Day Only (Does not include banquet)

  • NACSW Member: $125
  • Non-Member: $165 (Non-member rate includes 1/2 year NACSW membership)

Student Volunteer (Does not include Preconvention Training Institutes)

  • NACSW Member: $90
  • Non-Member: $110

Banquet Only (Note: Full Registration already includes banquet)

  • $50

Half-day Preconvention Institutes

  • $50 each
Will I receive a refund if I have to cancel my registration?
If your reservation is canceled prior to the Early Bird Registration Date of October 13, 2017, you will be refunded all but a $25 processing fee. If you cancel your registration after October 13, 2017, NACSW is unable to refund your registration.
Will I receive a confirmation of my registration and payment?
If you register online, you will immediately receive an onscreen confirmation as well as an email confirming your registration. If you register by mail, a confirmation and receipt will be emailed to you within a few days.
I am not a member of NACSW but my co-worker is and cannot attend. Can I use his/her membership to register at the member rate?
Membership rates apply only to the individuals who hold the membership. You can register at the non-member rate and take advantage of the six month free membership included in the price, or join NACSW for one year and register at the discounted member rate.
My agency is an organizational member of NACSW. Can I register at the member rate?
Organizational members can register up to four agency staff members at the discounted membership rate. Please check with your agency about informing NACSW which organizational staff members will be receiving organizational membership registration discounts.
My agency is paying for my attendance at the convention and I need an invoice from NACSW. How do I get an invoice?
If you require an invoice to have payment processed by your agency, please contact NACSW directly at 888-426-4712 or info@nacsw.org. An invoice will be e-mailed or mailed to you depending on your preference.
Are reduced conference registration rates available?
If you are retired or experiencing a financial hardship that makes it difficult for you to attend the convention, you may be eligible for a reduced conference registration rate. Contact the NACSW office at info@nacsw.org to request a reduced registration rate. Please do not complete your online registration until you have received confirmation from the NACSW office that you have been approved for a reduced registration rate.

I will have a car at the convention. Where can I park and is there a charge?
Complimentary Daily Self-Parking is available at the Crowne Plaza Charlotte Executive Park hotel.
I am flying to the convention. How can I get to the Crowne Plaza Charlotte Executive Park hotel?
The closest airport is Charlotte Douglas Intl Airport (CLT). An Airport Shuttle is available.


What hotel has been reserved? What are the rates?
Rooms have been reserved at the Crowne Plaza Charlotte Executive Park hotel (5700 West Park Drive, Charlotte, NC) for $129 per night (plus taxes and fees). The cost of the room remains $129 per night whether there is one person registered, or whether you choose to share the $129/night cost between up to three additional persons. All convention sessions will be held at the Crowne Plaza Charlotte Executive Park hotel.
Can I make my hotel reservation now?
Yes. Each individual guest must make their own reservations by calling 1-800-227-6963. You must mention that you are affiliated with the North American Association of Christians in Social Work (NACSW) to receive the discounted rate. You may also make a reservation online. Room reservations must be made by October 18, 2017 to guarantee the convention room rate of $129 per night. Rooms are subject to availability.
How do I make a hotel reservation?
Reservations for the hotel can be made by calling 1-800-227-6963. You may also make a reservation online. All reservations must be made on or before Wednesday, October 18, 2017. Guests should identify themselves as members of NACSW. All reservations must be guaranteed and accompanied by a first night room deposit or guaranteed with a major credit card.
Is there internet access at the Crowne Plaza Charlotte Executive Park hotel?
The hotel will provide complimentary guest room internet access.


What will be on the convention program?
Thursday Preconvention Institutes: These half-day presentations provide an opportunity for more in-depth learning and additional CE hours. Mike Dames will present a morning (9am-12pm) session focused on economic disparity in communities. Angela Gaddis will lead a morning workshop (9am-12pm) poverty simulation session. Ken Smith will lead a half-day afternoon workshop (1pm-4pm) on substance use disorders and/or co-occurring disorders. Ryn Farmer and Alexis Christensen will present an afternoon workshop (1pm-4pm) on leadership development in communities of color.

Thursday Night Opening Session and Networking Reception: Following the convention opening session featuring keynote speaker Rev. Dr. William Barber, enjoy refreshments and snacks while browsing poster presentations and checking out convention exhibits. Convention attendees will have the opportunity to meet and network with another throughout the evening.

Friday and Saturday Workshop Program: Attend a rich selection of workshops and earn CE hours. Workshops range from 60 to 90 minutes in length. There are 13 workshop tracks, including a new track this year: “Empowering Communities”

Friday Morning Alan Keith-Lucas Lecture: Dr. Tanya Brice, will focus race relations in the U.S.

Saturday Night Banquet: The Banquet is a favorite event of convention attendees. In addition to enjoying a delicious meal, attendees will be entertained by the Crazy4Jesus and hear from Rev. Bill Stanfield.

Sunday Morning Worship: Sunday morning worship will feature a sermon and musical praise.


Can I buy additional individual tickets to the Banquet? What is the cost?
Additional tickets can be purchased for the Saturday Evening Banquet at the cost of $50 each.
I am bringing my family with me. Will there be activities for them to enjoy in Charlotte?

What should I expect as a student volunteer?
In exchange for a 65% discount on your registration rate, as a student volunteer, you will spend 1/2 day to a full day at the convention providing assistance with tasks essential in helping the convention run smoothly. You will be assigned tasks such as monitoring workshops, helping with set-up and take-down, or assisting with registration. The success of the conference relies on volunteers, so NACSW depends on student volunteers being responsible in fulfilling their volunteer assignments.
How do I register as a student volunteer?
You may register online or download a form and mail the form to NACSW, with payment, to register as a student volunteer. You will be able to complete your registration as well as indicate your preferred day for volunteering.

Can I receive Continuing Education Contact hours (CE Hours) at NACSW Convention 2016?
CE Hours are available to convention participants for workshops and plenary sessions. Payment for CE Hours ($45) can be made with your registration payment. Attendees can earn up to 19.75 hours for attending two half-day preconvention institutes, all workshops, and all plenary sessions. CE Hours are approved by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), which is widely recognized in the US and Canada. It is important to note, however, that final authority for approving any continuing education activity rests with the state or province in which the participant is licensed.
What is the dress code?
Dress for the NACSW convention varies. Most attendees wear business casual clothing. Some attendees choose to wear more formal attire to the Saturday Evening Banquet.
