Confidentiality: Why, Who, Where, and How
This ethics training focuses on principles of privacy and confidentiality for a small agency largely staffed by volunteers to assist older adults with food sufficiency. Principles of confidentiality, motivations for respecting the information of others, and methods for protection of client information are the primary topics.
As a result of this training, participants will be able to:
Recognize the importance of privacy and confidentiality for client information
Explore the role of volunteers in the helping relationship
Understand the basic principles of confidentiality within a care team and value professional boundaries in the helping relationship
Helen Harris, EdD, has served as a social worker and bereavement coordinator for Hillcrest Community Hospice, where she was the first director of the program. She came to Waco to begin hospice work in the Waco/Central Texas area. Since coming to Baylor in 1997, she has continued to work with hospice by volunteering with Providence Hospice and by providing volunteer training for several area hospices. Mrs. Harris served as a social worker at the Methodist Children's Home and at South Texas Children's Home, where she developed the first independent living program and directed the foster care program. Before joining the School of Social Work faculty, she taught adjunctively for six years in Baylor's Health Education Department.
